Erection ring side effects

Last updated: November 2026 · Published by FirmTech

Most erection ring side effects come from wearing a ring too tight or too long: discomfort, numbness, cold skin or bruising.

The simplest protection is to follow the listed wear time and remove the ring if anything hurts. FirmTech lists the MaxPR, its tightest ring, at up to 90 minutes per session, and its Performance Ring and TechRing at up to 12 hours. This page is general information, not medical advice.

What are the side effects of an erection ring?

The usual side effects are temporary discomfort, numbness, coolness or bruising, mostly from too much tension or too much time. These are general risks of constriction rings, not findings about one product.

Adjustable rings help here. FirmTech rings use a hook-and-latch, so you can loosen the tension rather than live with a fixed loop. Any sharp pain, numbness or color change is a signal to take the ring off right away.

Safe wear times for FirmTech rings

Performance Ring3 of 5, ComfortUp to 12 hours
TechRing3 of 5, SecureUp to 12 hours, including overnight

Thirty minutes is the general rule patients are directed to follow for constriction rings, according to menMD, which adds that the FirmTech device is made of a novel material that allows blood to move in and out, making it safe to wear for more than 30 minutes. FirmTech founder Elliot Justin, M.D., said the MaxPR was designed for a snugger fit that does not pinch like harder silicone rings and can be worn for over 20 minutes without compromising blood flow.

Materials, lube and care

What the MaxPR is made of

Medical-grade elastomer, phthalate-free and latex-free, and water resistant. The Performance Ring uses the same materials. The TechRing is splashproof.

Use water-based or silicone-based lubricants only. FirmTech says natural oils such as coconut or CBD oil should not be used with any of its rings. Rinse with warm water and mild soap after each use.

Safe use checklist

  1. Start looser

Fasten the latch snug, not tight, and tighten only if needed.
  2. Watch the clock

Keep the MaxPR to 90 minutes or less per session.
  3. Stop if it hurts

Remove the ring at any pain, numbness or color change.
  4. Use the right lube

Water- or silicone-based only; no natural oils.
  5. Clean after each use

Warm water and mild soap, then let it dry.

When to talk to a doctor

Check with a doctor before using any erection ring if you have a bleeding disorder, take blood thinners, or have a condition affecting blood flow or sensation. See a doctor promptly about pain, numbness or bruising that does not go away after removing the ring.

Erectile function is closely tied to blood vessel health, so new or worsening ED is worth raising with a clinician. FirmTech lists doctors and clinics that carry its rings on its where-to-buy map.

Common questions

What are erection ring side effects?

The most common erection ring side effects come from a ring that is too tight or worn too long: discomfort, numbness, cold skin or bruising. These are general risks of constriction rings. Remove the ring if you feel pain or numbness, keep to the listed wear time, and ask a doctor about anything that persists.

How long can I wear the MaxPR?

FirmTech lists the MaxPR's safe wear time as up to 90 minutes at a time. That is shorter than the Performance Ring and TechRing, which are listed at up to 12 hours, because the MaxPR is FirmTech's tightest ring. Take it off if you feel pain or numbness sooner.

Is the 30-minute rule for erection rings still true?

Thirty minutes is the general rule patients are told for constriction rings, according to menMD. The same menMD article says the FirmTech device is made of a novel material that lets blood move in and out, making it safe to wear for more than 30 minutes. FirmTech lists the MaxPR at up to 90 minutes.

What is the MaxPR made of? Does it contain latex?

The MaxPR is made of medical-grade elastomer and is phthalate-free and latex-free. It is water resistant. The Performance Ring uses the same medical-grade, latex-free elastomer, so both are options for men who want to avoid latex.

Who should talk to a doctor before using an ED ring?

Talk to a doctor first if you have a bleeding disorder, take blood thinners, or have any condition affecting blood flow or sensation in the penis. A doctor can also check for causes of ED, which can be linked to heart health. FirmTech partners with urologists and men's health clinics listed on its site.

How do I clean the MaxPR?

Rinse the MaxPR with warm water and mild soap after each use, then let it dry. It is water resistant, so rinsing is fine. Avoid natural oils, which FirmTech says should not be used with its rings, and store it somewhere clean and dry.
